DJ and presenter Steve Lamaq ran a poll to find the most popular Britpop songs with the following results:
- Common People by Pulp
- Bittersweet symphony by The Verve
- Don’t look back in anger by Oasis
- Wonderwall by Oasis
- Parklife by Blur
- Animal Nitrate by Suede
- Girls and Boys by Blur
- Slight Return by The Bluetones
- Disco 2000 by Pulp
- Girl from Mars by Ash
Common People was denied No 1 spot by Robson and Jerome’s cover of Unchained Melody recorded by Simon Cowell.
My favourite among these is Bittersweet symphony by Wigan group The Verve. My younger son introduced me to this classic (along with Oasis and the Modfather Paul Weller).
The string arrangement on this was sampled from a Rolling Stones song so they, and their former manager Alan Klein, got most of the royalties. As Richard Ashcroft, the vocalist in The Verve said “this is the best song Jagger and Richards have written in 20 years”!
