There are lots of examples of misheard lyrics, sometimes called “mondegreens”, a word coined by an American writer who described how she misheard part of a ballad “The Bonnie Earl of o’Moray” in which she thought she heard the words “they have slain the Earl o’Moray and Lady Mondegreen” instead of “and laid him on the green”.
More recent examples include “kicking the dancing queen” in Abba’s hit and “touched for the 31st time” in Madonna’s.
And Queen didn’t sing about “kicking the cat” in We Will Rock You.
Others include Johnny Nash not singing “I can see clearly now Lorraine has gone” and Starship “built this city on logs and coal“.
Not forgetting Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers duet praising “Ireland’s Industry”
